"America needs an experienced leader who has compassionate conservative values and a winning candidacy that will reach out to all," read the letter signed by 12 Republican State Senators and 24 Republican State Representatives. "We are impressed with your policy and political record in Texas and know that these successes are available to you in New Mexico."
"Governor Bush has shown that an activist conservative Governor can win reelection by a huge margin in a big, diverse state. That's an important statement for our party," said Representative Jeannette Wallace (R-43) who represents Los Alamos and parts of Sandoval County.
Senate Minority Leader Skip Vernon of Bernalillo added that "Governor Bush has shown that a strong leader can unite people from all backgrounds and make great strides for common good."
Although the New Mexico Presidential primary is more than 15 months away, Republican legislators throughout New Mexico are already choosing their candidates with Governor George W. Bush emerging as the front-runner.
"Whether it is dealing with his top priority of education, or moving people off welfare, Governor Bush is a conservative who has proven that a compassionate philosophy can bring hope to everyone," said Representative Bobbie Mallory (R-67) who represents Quay, Harding, Union, DeBaca, Curry and Roosevelt counties.
Senator Rod Adair (R-33) of Chaves and Eddy counties said, "I think all of America has been impressed by his success in Texas. I have urged Governor Bush to enter this race because his candidacy will bring an important voice to the debate."
The New Mexico Presidential Primary will be held in June 2000.
