Below is the text of an ad that ran in the April 5, 1999 San Jose Mercury News, coinciding with a visit of Vice President Gore to the area. Although the ad was easy to overlook--it was tucked away in the business section and was only a quarter-page in size--it generated national attention and was mentioned in many news reports.
As New Economy leaders, we understand the need to thrive in a competitive environment -- not just in business, but also in politics. We are a diverse constituency, and no single candidate or party embodies the industry. We need visionary leaders who understand the New Economy. We the undersigned, therefore, encourage Texas Governor George W. Bush to formally declare his candidacy for President of the United States.
Governor Bush knows the New Economy demands an educated workforce, and has made education a top priority in his home state. His school reforms are now a model for the country. He has guided tort reform through the Legislature, so entrepreneurs can pursue new technologies, rather than defend against frivolous lawsuits. He is creating an environment that stresses personal responsibility over government intervention, and innovation over regulation.
We look forward to a spirited bipartisan debate on the issues and encourage George W. Bush to run for President to ensure that the United States continues to symbolize the best the future has to offer.
