Vice President Gore formally announced his candidacy for President of the United States on June 16, 1999 in front of the Smith County Courthouse in Carthage, TN.  He then proceeded on a tour which took him to Iowa City, Iowa (June 16), Manchester, NH (June 17, shown above), New York City (June 17), Los Angeles, CA and Seattle, WA (June 18).

In the New Hampshire stop, Al and Tipper Gore moderated a discussion about economic issues at Hesser College.  A fact sheet "Vice President Al Gore--Working for New Hampshire" noted some highlights of the strong economy including: "created more than 102,000 new jobs in New Hampshire," "lowered unemployment in New Hampshire to 3 percent," "25,000 people in New Hampshire received pay raises" and "130,000 New Hampshire families received tax credits."  Among the crowd of several hundred people at Hesser College were members of the International Association of Fire Fighters.  Clad in bright yellow T-shirts, IAFF members have had a visible presence at many Gore events.
