A number of groups took advantage of Vice President Gore's announcement tour speech at Hesser College to demonstrate their concerns, using various means, appropriate and otherwise.

Gore was greeted by two full-page ads in the Union Leader.  One, an open letter from RNC chairman Jim Nicholson, welcomed Gore to the race for the presidency and stated that, "This can be a real opportunity for you to level with the American people."  The second, part of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' ongoing campaign to stop an animal testing program, proclaimed, "Republicans won't be the only ones suffering through four years of Al Gore."  Meanwhile, the Republican Leadership Council ran a 30-second TV spot, "Leadership," which hit Gore for supporting tax hikes and stated that Gore had "led the fight for higher income taxes."

Several protesters outside--PETA's "Gorey Bunny" and handler and a member of United for a Fair Economy--were kept well away from the hall, confined not just to the edge of the parking lot but to a sidewalk all the way across the street.  Despite these precautions, a dramatic demonstration occurred during Gore's speech itself when a group of four or five protesters seated in the bleachers directly behind Gore leaped up, unfurled a sheet with "Gore Kills--AIDS Drugs for Africa" painted on it, and proceeded to noisely disrupt the event. After a time, they were led away.
