On July 6, 1999, in the second of three planning meetings for the straw poll, the campaigns bid against each for pre-event space outside the venue.  The silent auction was conducted at state party headquarters.  The spaces were of different sizes and proximities to the venue, with the prime location being closest to the West Door.  (In 1995 space had been allocated on a first come, first served basis, resulting in some disorder).  Results of the auction: Bush $43,500, Forbes $8,000, Dole $5,500, Kasich $4,500, Alexander $4,300, Bauer $4,200, Smith $3,000, Quayle $2,000, Hatch $1,500, Keyes $1,000, Buchanan $1,000.
Kasich and Smith quit the Republican race before the straw poll and their money was refunded.  Bush, Forbes, Dole and Alexander kept their original spaces, but some of the remaining campaigns shifted around to the final locations on the map above; their payments were adjusted accordingly.

Site Areas
Alexander -- 32,175 square feet.
Bauer -- 67,500 square feet.
Buchanan -- 62,100 square feet (Buchanan's site was originally the narrow space directly above his final location on map above; he took over the larger space when Quayle moved to the former Smith location).
Bush -- 60,000 square feet.
Dole -- 67,500 square feet.
Forbes -- 44,500 square feet.
Hatch -- 12,000 square feet.
Keyes -- 65,000 square feet (Keyes was originally situated in the narrow space next to Hatch's site but he then opted for the larger space).
Quayle -- 3,000 square feet (Quayle was originally situated where Buchanan ended up; he moved to the former Smith location).
