Note: After the event Laura Bush and children's author Angela Shelf-Medearis visited Seaton Elementary School at 1503 10th Street in Northwest Washington, DC, while thirteen other children's authors visited additional District schools.

Laura Bush is a former teacher and librarian.  This event is similar to one she did the day before her husband was first sworn in as Texas governor; she hosted seven Texas authors who read from their books at the University of Texas’ Harry Ransom Center.  Also, in 1996 Mrs. Bush helped organize the Texas Book Festival, which has become an annual fundraiser for Texas public libraries.
