AMERICAN PIE

A long long time ago, I can still remember
How the press corps was afraid to smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make Kit and CC dance
And even Sandra would be happy for awhile
        But February made me shiver
Until Al was the primary winner
        Bradley left the big race
        Bush-Cheney took his place
Bush can't remember what he thought
When he helped Big Oil and gave children naught
But something gave me this one thought
When he and Al Gore fought
Bye Bye Bush Cheney big time
Dropped your levy for the wealthy
        Till the surplus was dry
        Your tax cut plan
Is just a poke in the eye
For working families that just try to get by

Will you help the rich you love
And wait for trickles from above
If the right wing tells you so...
Now do you believe in the right to choose
Or will women be the ones who lose
And can you say Kostunica real slow
Well I saw the RATS in Alex's ad
But you never said you found it bad
You both kissed off the press
Just who is covering whose ass

        Cont

You like to take your press corps in your truck
But please no pool when you're raising bucks
But I think you'll be out of luck
        28 days from now
You'll be singing Bye Bye Dick Cheney we tried
To beat Al Gore telling stories 'bout his dog on lodine
Our negative ads left us both high and dry
Now the nation has said to us both bye bye

Now for one year you've been on our case
Traveling around from place to place
But that's not how it has to be
When the press corps sang for the VP
In a tune that came from '63
And a song that came from yours truly
And while John King comes travelin' round
Claire Shipman stole his golden crown
The press pool all felt burned
        No press calls were returned
And while Lehane read Begalas' book
        Fabiani changed his looks
And you all let Bush off the hook
        The day the surplus died

Bye Bye our big surplus bye bye
You're too busy or to dizzy to ask Bush Cheney why
To help the rich but not the working class guy
Saying maybe they'll get lucky next time

        Cont

Helter Skelter all the polls akelter
The numbers flew down your fallout shelter
8 points high and fallin fast
        USA landed on the plane
The pundits all tried to explain
With Bernie stuck debating in Lehane
Now the debate prep was sweet relief
While the Bush team searched for a new fig leaf
        To hide their budget hole
And to find that mole Karl Rove
Now it's time to take the field
And show how Bush's plan would steal The prosperity we all should feel
        The day the surplus died

Bye Bye medicine drugs bye bye
Sold our seniors down the river
So the tax cut can fly
Those HMO's would soon be doing high-fives
Saying that little bean counter would be in ---

And here we all are in one place
Stuck in a hotel filing space
With no line left to file the news
So come on Chip be nimble, John be Quick
Jim Angle sat on Britt Humes' schtick
Laura Fox is the Washington Times only friend
And as I watched the press avail
I wondered what could be the tale
        No angle that made sense
        Could defend Bush's pretense
And as the spinster dammed at the debate

        Cont

To say of course their guy did great
I saw glimpse of Bush-Cheney fat
        On November 8th
        They'll be singing
        Bye Bye 1600 bye bye
All my daddy's rich oil buddies will be wondering why
They raised so much and still the shrub came up day
Singing next time I think I'll take a bye

I met a girl name Karen Hughes
And asked her from some happy news
But she just moaned and turned away
I went down to McKinnon's shop
Where I heard the buck had finally stopped
But the girl there said the pants were in the mail
And in the streets the people streamed from the FL
Coast to TN No child was forgotten
        No Classrooms were left rotten
And the two folks with the helping hand Al Gore and Joe Lieberman
They brought a new hope to the land
The day that George Bush sighed
        They were singing
My My looks looks like John Zogby lied
polled the likelies and the women till they wanted to cry
These two old boys are eating cream cheese on rye
Singing this has been the song of our lives

Performed not quite to the tune of "American Pie" by Don McLean
