The Third Party Presidential Debate
The Independence Party of Minnesota hosted a presidential debate on Sept. 28 at the Roy Wilkins Ballroom at St. Paul RiverCentre in St. Paul.  All candidates with ballot access in enough states to gain the requisite 270 electoral votes were invited (seven candidates: Pat Buchanan, Harry Browne, George Bush, Al Gore, John Hagelin, Ralph Nader and Howard Phillips).  Buchanan did not respond to the invitation; Nader would only participate if Bush ad Gore did.  Thus only Browne, Hagelin and Phillips participated in the two-hour debate, which was moderated by Shawn Towle (publisher of the Checks & Balances website), and televised on C-SPAN.
