Announced he would not make a 2000 presidential bid on March 2, 1999 during the course of a routine interview with Tennessee reporters.

Fred Thompson, Republican, of Nashville, Tennessee.
Current U.S. Senator from Tennessee.  Elected to fill partial term in 1994; re-elected to full term in 1996.  Chairs the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee and is a member of the Judiciary Committee. 
 
Career Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994 in his first campaign for public office.  He won the seat formerly held by Vice President Al Gore. 
Lawyer-lobbyist with offices in Washington and Nashville. 
Has acted in 18 motion pictures including In the Line of Fire, where he portrayed the White House chief of staff, Born Yesterday as a Senator for sale, and Hunt for Red October, as an admiral.  First role was as an attorney in Marie 
Minority Counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, headed by Sen. Howard Baker, 1973-74. 
Named an Assistant United States Attorney in 1969. 
 
Activities Authored a Watergate memoir At That Point in Time (1975, Quadrangle/New York Times Book Co.).

Family Divorced.  Father of three grown children: Tony, Betsy and Daniel.  Five grandchildren. 
 
Age 56 years old.  Born August 19, 1942 in Sheffield, Alabama; grew up in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
