Endorsements by Newspapers & Magazines
Below is a sampling of newspaper endorsements from around the country based on information provided by the campaigns, web searches, news reports and Yahoo's listing.  Overall Gov. Bush appeared to be ahead of Vice President Gore in terms of numbers of endorsements.  See the notes below.  If you know of others that should be added please email action@gwu.edu
also possibly of interest Endorsements by National Organizations

It is generally believed that newspaper endorsements or recommendations do not have much impact on voting decisions in the general election presidential race, as voters have many opportunities to view the candidates on television and read about their doings.  Newspaper endorsements may be more important in primary races when candidates are striving for credibility, and they likely have a greater impact in people's decisions about ballot measures and local candidates.  Nonetheless, by long tradition most newspapers do endorse in the presidential race.1  Depending on the paper, the editorial board, the publisher or the owner may weigh in to varying degrees to determine who the paper backs.  Regardless of their impact or lack of impact, endorsements do offer well written, thoughtful views on the candidates' strengths and weaknesses.

The Spotlight
No Endorsement Specialty Press
Example of papers that do not endorse candidates or do not endorse in the presidential race or whose editorial boards were unable to reach a consensus:
Alaska
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner  ["I'm sure at some point in the News-Miner's 97-year history we've made endorsements, but not in recent memory. It never came up this year."]
Arkansas
Morning News of Northwest Arkansas
Jonesboro Sun
Pine Bluff Commercial [Managing editor Tom McDonald and publisher Charles A. Berry differed; Berry backed Bush, McDonald, Gore.  "I'm fortunate enough to have a publisher who will allow me my view and won't force me to write editorials I don't believe in," McDonald stated later.]

Santa Barbara News-Press --11/05/00
Iowa
Globe Gazette (Mason City) --11/05/00
Waterloo Courier --11/05/00
Kentucky
Paducah Sun [generally doesn't endorse, although exceptions made]
The Daily Independent (Ashland) [the six-member editorial board divided three to three.  Opinion page editor John Cannon said that the board voted several times but remained "hopelessly split."  The paper ran a non-endorsement on Oct. 22; this was the first time it had not made a presidential endorsement in at least three decades.]
Louisiana
The Advocate (Baton Rouge) ["For some years, we have had a policy of not endorsing in any race...  The only exception to the no-endorsement policy in recent years was the David Duke/Edwin Edwards race for governor." Bill Bankston]
Maine
Lewiston Sun-Journal  ["This newspaper simply has a long tradition of not endorsing candidates for any office at any level...   We do editorialize on practically every other subject under the Sun.  People here can only remember twice that we endorsed an individual, once for Olympia Snowe because she was a hometown person and once for Gov. King..."  --Rex Rhoades, Executive Editor]

Notes
1. Greg Mitchell.  "E&P/TIPP Poll: Bird in the Hand for Bush?" Editor & Publisher, Nov. 6, 2000.
This article, based on a survey of 800 editors and publishers (193 responses), provides a useful picture of newspaper endorsements.  For example, the survey found that 4 of 5 responding editors and publishers believed that "endorsing candidates 'is an important responsibility of newspapers.'"  Overall, at least 3 of 4 papers made an endorsement in the presidential race, but the percentage was closer  to 2 of 3 for small newspapers, defined as those with less than 50,000 circulation.  The survey also found that a higher percentage of smaller papers endorsed Gov. Bush (3 to 1 for Bush) than did larger papers. Medium, 50,000-100,000 circulation papers went 5 to 3 for Bush, while large sized papers (circulations greater than 100,000) went 5 to 4 for Bush.

2. "*" indicates the paper endorsed Clinton-Gore in 1996.

3. "+" according to the Bush campaign, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has never endorsed a presidential candidate.

4. EWS=E.W. Scripps Co.  The E.W. Scripps Co. chain mandates use of its endorsement for president in its 21 dailies.  [Abilene Reporter-News, The Albuquerque Tribune, Anderson Independent-Mail, Birmingham Post-Herald, The Cincinnati Post (including The Kentucky Post, an edition), The Commercial Appeal, Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Daily Camera (Boulder), Denver Rocky Mountain News, Evansville Courier & Press, The Gleaner (Henderson, Ky.), The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Naples Daily News (including Bonita Daily News, an edition), Redding Record Searchlight, San Angelo Standard-Times, The Stuart News, The Tribune (Ft. Pierce), The Sun (Bremerton), Ventura County Star, Vero Beach Press Journal, Wichita Falls Times Record News].  The endorsement was determined through a group discussion of about 20 editors and executives of newspapers owned by Scripps.
