The Mayor was joined at today's City Hall press conference by Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson, Republican National Committee Co-Chair Pat Harrison, Republican National Committee Site Selection Chair Jan Larimer and Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Planning and Administration Randy Levine.  

"I can think of no other place that can match the energy and excitement of New York City--and certainly no place more suitable to host the Republican National Convention in the summer of 2000," said Mayor Giuliani. "Over the past four years New York City has shown the country what Republican leadership can do for a city, and we have shown the country and the world how a city can reinvent itself. With overall crime down 48 percent and homicides down 70 percent, with more than 364,000 people off public assistance, and with the creation of more than 236,000 new private sector jobs, New York City has developed a reputation that any city in America would be proud to have. There's a new sense of optimism in the air that New Yorkers and people from around the world have noticed.  

"New York City's turn-around has been based on the guiding principles of the Republican Party--the belief that the strength of a City lies with the individual and that each person's dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored," the Mayor concluded.  

Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson said, "The turn-around that New York City has experienced under Mayor Giuliani has made the Big Apple shine as a possible location for our 2000 Convention."  

Among the activities that members of the Republican National Convention Site Selection Committee will partake in during their two day visit to New York City include: a visit to Madison Square Garden, the proposed site for the Convention; a Broadway Show; sightseeing throughout the City on a double-decker bus; a tour of City Hall; meals at some of New York City's finest restaurants including Tavern On The Green, Windows on the World, The Rainbow Room and DaNico's, one of the Mayor's favorite restaurants in Little Italy; and dinner at Gracie Mansion following a reception for the Annual Crystal Apple Award Presentations.
