July 29, 2000--It has been
more than fourteen months since Gov. George W. Bush launched his bid for
the Republican presidential nomination back in March 1999. In June
of that year Bush made his first campaign swing to the key states of Iowa
and New Hampshire, accompanied by a crush of several hundred reporters.
Bush's campaign has raised record amounts of money. Despite a number
of "bumps in the road," most notably his being thumped by Sen. John McCain
in New Hampshire primary, Bush effectively secured the Republican nomination
on March 7. Bush made good use of the following four months,
introducing a range of proposals that help to define "compassionate conservatism."
On July 25, after weeks of speculation on vice presidential possibilities,
Bush named former defense secretary Dick Cheney as his running mate, and
on the 26th Bush and Cheney rallied in Cheney's hometown of Casper, Wyoming.
From July 28 to August 1
Bush embarked on a multi-state tour through key swing states. His
wife Laura accompanied him on most stops, as did Cheney on the first day.
The campaign noted that, "Ironically, the Republican Party hasn't won any
of these states in a presidential election since 1988, but Governor Bush
is currently leading Al Gore in polls in each state." Thus did Bush
arrive in Philadelphia to receive the GOP nomination.
