Miscellaneous Notes

Although Nader had significant support in Vermont, it was not nearly enough to tip the balance to Bush as it did in neigboring New Hampshire.

Gore's state director Watson went to the convention in Los Angeles, and wanted to do more. She felt strongly about upholding the Clinton-Gore legacy and fighting the "new conservatism." Even though she'd never been to Vermont, she ended up running the campaign there for the last month. At the time she started Gore was 12-15 points ahead in polls. The first few days she drove around the state to make sure that the campaign had a presence; fortuitously it happened to be the time of peak foliage.

Nader. Ralph Nader spoke at the School for International Training in Brattleboro on Oct. 2 as part of a Northeast swing leading up to the first presidential debate in Boston. The Rutland Herald reported "an enthusiastic crowd of about 600 people." Vermont Progressive Party gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina was one of the people who introduced Nader. The Progressive Party and Greens espouse similar views and Nader likely benefited to some extent from the Progressive Party's organization. (Pollina obtained 9.5% of the vote in the gubernatorial race). The Progressive Party, which has its origins in Bernie Sanders' run for mayor, filed as a party in 1998 and organized in 1999; Greens have not organized a party in Vermont.
Matteo Burani served as campaign coordinator for Nader.

Buchanan. Pat Buchanan visited Vermont on Oct. 12. He spoke out against the state's civil unions law at Richard Lambert's farm in Washington (Lambert launched the "Take Back Vermont!" movement). The Buchanan campaign also ran a radio ad in the state.
